To learn a little more about the Love to Sing course, please read through our FAQs.

Q: What will I learn on the course?
A: In each session, we will cover correct singing techniques for singing in four-part close harmony. We will also practice a range of techniques and skills typical in the barbershop craft then will put everything together to learn a beautifully harmonised song.

Q: Who are Mersey Harmony?
A: We are a group of enthusiastic women, from all walks of life, who meet every Monday to sing under the direction of a professional vocal coach. Our speciality is barbershop singing – an a cappella style using close four-part harmony. We really enjoy our chords so sing them a bit longer than in other forms of a cappella. We also laugh a lot.Our rehearsals are informal and relaxed, but we work hard to achieve perfectly tuned chords. It is a phenomenal experience and really lifts our week. New members are always welcome and the Love to Sing course is a great way to learn more about who we are and what we do.

Q: Will it just be singing exercises?
A: Absolutely not! Although, a portion of each session will be about warming up to prepare our minds, bodies, and voices to sing. After our warm-up, we will move onto singing; this includes barbershop craft sessions and learning a song in close four-part harmony.

Q: Who is teaching the course?
A: Our MD, Luke Freeney will be teaching the course. Aside from being a Barbershop gold medallist singer, Luke performs with many choirs and groups throughout the region including the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Choir, The Liverpool Bach Collective, The St Nicholas Singers, and Exordium.Luke began directing Mersey Harmony in April 2017. He enjoys leading laid-back and uplifting rehearsals that produce extraordinary sound.

Q: How do I know part to sing? Will I have to sing on my own?
A: There is no need to worry. We will do a group exercise at the start of the course that will help us decide who is suited to which voice part. No one will be expected to sing on their own at any time.

Q: I don’t read music, will I be able to keep up?
A: Non-music readers are welcome, and audio teach tracks will be provided so you can learn your part. All singers will have to practice a bit at home, as there isn’t enough time in rehearsal to do it all.

Q: The last time I sang properly was years ago, does that matter?
A: Welcome back to singing! We welcome singers of all levels and experience.

Q: My family tell me I sing out of tune, will this course help?
A: As this is a harmony singing course, we expect to attract singers who are already able to sing in tune.

Q: What if I enjoy it so much I want to keep coming?
A: There is no expectation for any attendee to sing with Mersey Harmony long-term; however there will be plenty of opportunities to chat to current members about what is involved in being a permanent member. If you complete the course, you will be offered one-month FREE membership to learn more about what we do on a regular basis.

Q: I’ve decided to come on the course, do I need to bring anything?
A: Yourself, your voice, a pencil, and a bottle of water (during the course, light refreshments will be available during the break, but you may want to stay hydrated during practice). All other course materials will be provided.

NOTE: Please do not bring your germs! If you are feeling slightly under the weather, you are welcome to “sit out” and learn by observation; however, if you are unwell with something contagious or infectious we’d encourage you to stay home and not risk infecting other singers.

Q: Is there an age limit? Is this course only for women?
A: The course is open to all women over the age of 18.

Q: If I can’t come every week, is that ok?
A: To gain full benefit, you should plan to attend every week, but we understand that sometimes life gets in the way.

Q: If I can’t attend at all, will I get a refund?
A: You will get a full refund as long as you let us know at least 24 hours before the course starts.

Q: Is parking available?
A: Yes. The course is held in our regular rehearsal space, where there is ample parking.

Q: Is the venue accessible?
A: The rehearsal space is accessible, but we understand that this does not mean the same thing for all people so please contact us about your access needs, and we will do whatever we can to accommodate you
